"Earth and Sky", 2008, Iris print on nylon mesh - a collaboration between Shuvinai Ashoona, Cape Dorset and John Noestheden, Pilot Butte.

In February 2008 Shuvinai and John were invited to Calgary by Curator Wayne Baerwaldt to collaborate at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Shuvinai's visual interests and strengths are about the land and John's are about the sky. They first innitiated independent sections of a drawing and then started to work together. They recognized that they were both dreamers-Shuvinai of earth spaces and John of sky spaces-both creating fictitious places. They both represented their interests, memories, learning and experiences on the planet.

Shuvinai drew with felt tip pens and John drew with a photocopier. They negotiated where the earth and sky would meet and where some of the stars would find themselves in both realms. Shuvinai developed five horizons and decided that stars could fit between those multiple horizons. She saw some of the stars as snowflakes and requested that they be placed on her stone outcroppings. Ambiguity, experimentation, daring and playfulness assumed their roles in a very collaborative effort that melded into a unified whole.

Shuvinai and John are two contemporary artists who shared a common vision where artistic integrity and respectfulness became partners in their shared world, beautifully presented as a public art project.
