Noestheden extracts these comet images from print media representations found in Astronomy books and guides to the Universe. After first investigating the interpretive modeling of space and scale by regenerating the illustrations through numerous photocopier enlargements onto 8 1/2 x 11 inch transparencies, the artist then projects these photomechanical mediations onto various sizes of Arches paper. Like a monastic scribe, he painstakingly and systematically drafts the projections with India ink, pens and brushes. Photocopier "noise" (mechanical seizures) becomes part of the aesthetic mix. All of the "transcriptions" (think music) are results of interpretive/reiterative actions which investigate the intrinsic nature of visualization and attempt to represent the unseen and unfathomable in the Universe. Manipulation, variability, inconsistency, the changeability of scientific knowledge and imperfection are constants. Noestheden, therefore, creates exquisite lies about the Universe derived from all manner of celestial data.
